“I am having a tough year already! It is just the end of the first quarter and my company has already fallen behind!” confessed Paul (CEO of a fast growing, services company with several thousand people worldwide).


“From what I know about your organization Paul, you have to take the blame for it!” I said in flat tone.


WHAT????” said Paul.


Paul is a dynamic young CEO. He is innovative, aggressive, a great people person and yet numbers driven, just everything you need from a leader.


“Paul, we have seen several organizations like yours that are growing fast with innovative, dynamic leaders like yourself. Literally every one of the leaders is so full of life, ideas and strategies that their management team is not able to keep up with them because they are being led into different directions. What you need to do is to, ‘Do one thing and do it better than anybody else in the world’! It is all about ‘Consistency of Purpose’. In fact it is always about ‘Consistency of Purpose’



“What do you mean?, asked Paul, still a little upset but now realizing that I was giving him a management tip.


“Everything you do with your team, every conversation, every meeting, every thought of yours should tie back to your goals for the organization (Key Result Area for the organization). That in turn should go back to Vision and Mission statements of your organization. And you must explicitly say it!”


“Easier said than done Harsha. I know I have to do this that but HOW!? No management guide ever tells you this.” challenged Paul.


“You are right. But the way to execute ‘Consistency of Purpose’ is simple. Just follow this three step process:

  1. Have only one initiative per quarter for the entire organization. Meaning, you get at most, four initiatives per year.
  2. Every time anyone brings a new idea, new initiative, concept, check to see if it matches the current initiative and KRA of your company. If not, say NO! This is critical.
  3. Make sure you track everyone on the Key Result Area, everyday, and in literally every meeting (whatever the meeting), on objective benchmarks or service levels.


Then your company will slowly align itself to these goals and initiatives that you will start gelling together as unit.”!



“Hmmm… it does make sense” said Paul, now completely engrossed in how it applies to his organization, “But how on earth do I measure everyone objectively on an initiative, and how do I make it trickle down and how to do track it every day and make it a part of everybody’s life in the organization?”
