Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

The line, ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’, comes straight from the back cover of the 1974 edition of the Whole Earth Catalogue. Being a counterculture magazine, Whole Earth Catalogue was filled with subtle ideology. The term became renowned after Steve Jobs’ speech in 2005 at the Stanford Commencement. Steve Jobs had ended his speech at the event with these lines, imparting the students of this wisdom as they walked out of the university to begin their professional lives. This unorthodox usage became a value for Vantage Agora because of the meaning behind it. Here we introduce the world to our 3rd Value—’Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’.

Let’s look at and learn the value in two parts. The first part ‘Stay Hungry’ does not have the literal sense of needing food. Here, ‘Stay Hungry’ signifies ambition. It tells us to be ambitious for more. Sometimes, people who are successful tend to relax and resort to their former glories after awhile. This is not the way of life for a hungry person. He/She has that burning, persistent ambition to continue challenging themselves even after success. They don’t sell off their business after the initial triumph and retire to hit the beach. Instead, they toil even harder to raise the bar and strive to become the best in the world and stay there.

The second half of the statement tells us to ‘Stay Foolish’. This signifies the importance of taking risks. Albert Einstein once quoted, “The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” Wise people know that they cannot touch the stars, but that does not stop a fool from trying. When you do not know the limit, then you probably do not have one. This statement urges us to stray from the traditional path and take the road less-travelled, to live with the belief that life is much broader and more interesting on the path that is less-travelled.

Merge these two concepts together and you can be the alchemist that turns everything you touch to gold. Have the hunger to aim for more and the will to strive for it without giving up. Slowly the limitations fade away, opening the door to unlimited possibilities.

Use this timeless call to action. Challenge yourself to pursue your wildest ambitions, as crazy as they may seem, with tremendous enthusiasm and without regard for things that are considered ‘mainstream’.
