“What???!!! That is crazy! How can there be a value be a value for imperfection” you ask.
There is an important place for imperfection in your organization. In the last 20+ years of product development and implementation at several customers worldwide, one thing that the best companies have done is to ‘Put pavements where there are footprints‘ i.e. Be imperfect and then evolve!
I will give you three imperfect methods that will enable you to implement any new system or process successfully in your company.
When you implement/build/customize products like ox zion, ERP, or bring in an outsourced partner, etc., that impact enterprise process and the culture of your organization, start small! Meaning, get first cut version that is a just a small change from the ‘As Is’ (or the existing process) your team has been following. This changed process might not be the perfect system or the ideal way of doing things but still go ahead and force your team stay course and use the system.
Once the team has used the system (Oh! They will complain for a while :)!) for 30 days, go ahead and ask them how we can improve the system and the process. You want to wait for at least a one month to eliminate requirements of product knowledge gaps.
Conclusion: Start small steps but enforce it!
Tell your team that you are going to cater to only three requirements for product enhancements/improvements. This will force the team to prioritize what they really want. They will not give you an endless list of requirements.
Conclusion: Prioritize. 80% value come with least efforts. The rest is not worth it!
Most people hate change, especially in mid-management. The #1 reason for this is “Job security”. They will tell you the “…the product @##!!“‘, “…the vendor is bad“, “I am late because of the new process…” are some of our favorites. Persist with your imperfect decisions. Once these people get used to the system, process, vendor and realize that their jobs are made easier, will become the champions of the process.
Conclusion: Make your mid-management the champions of the new system, process, vendor success. Persist with your decision and measure on objectively.
